Kurt Smith Municipal Bonds Specialist

When Kurt joined the Maplewood Investment Team in 2010, he brought deep and diverse bond market knowledge, having worked in bonds markets since 1986.

He began his career in municipals with MBank Capital Markets. Thereafter he joined Barre & Company, where his experience expanded to include collateralized mortgage obligations (CMOs) and corporates, including lower-rated junk bonds.

Kurt joined Southwest Securities in 1996. During this time, he developed The Select Approach™, which is a method of providing direction, strengthening relationships, and utilizing creativity in formulating strategy and selecting municipal bonds. He continues to utilize this methodology today with high-net-worth individuals and money manager clients.

In 1997, Kurt founded The Select Group as a way to leverage technology and relationships to provide a higher level of service to his clients. His focus on the bond markets led to the development of The Tax-Free Cash Investment Program™ and The Tax-Free Growth Program™, which seek to bring additional opportunities to his clients.

The Maplewood Investments team has long maintained active participation in the regulatory community, and Kurt has served as a FINRA arbitrator to support numerous arbitrations involving issues in the brokerage industry since 1994.

He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin.

Kurt is a native of Texas, born in Dallas. He and his wife Lisa have two sons, Harrison and Michael. Kurt enjoys traveling to the northeast to visit family and is an avid follower of his beloved Texas Longhorns football team.
